So far we have the $172,000.00 mistake by City Manager Jim Palenick for trying to cut corners. We can add another $200,000 to that for a sidewalk that the Mayor and the City Manager had torn up and repaved because they just didn't' like the first one. According to the City Manager it wasn't a big deal because things like that are common. We should include the $390,000 lawsuit settlement that the city paid because they illegally fired a police officer. Another one is the Kress Building for the amount of $427,403. Some of you may ask where we get that figure and it is the sum for what the city will pay for the building minus it's tax value. The amount really should be even more when you consider once the city makes the purchase it will no longer be on the tax rolls. To make room for the new convention center the city was responsible for $25,000 worth of damage to surrounding buildings during the demolition period.
Alright, what is our total so far? A whopping $1,214,403.00. That is correct people, over a million dollars in just mistakes. No wonder the city had to make changes to employee benefit packages and were talking about how to avoid layoffs. They are losing money faster than the tax payers can earn it.
What other mistakes has there been? Who really knows. You could also include things that were just stupid as mistakes as well. Items such as sub leasing city space to the Worthy Foundation for a whopping big loss for the city. We love the Worthy Foundation and do not place any blame at their feet but the city was just plain stupid to agree to this. Should we include the bonds for park improvements? Probably not. That wasn't a mistake. Instead it was an out right lie and complete disrespect for the vote of the people. Nothing is a mistake when it takes so much planning and dishonesty to try and fool the voters.
We thought about including the payments that the City Council receives if they do not accept insurance but that is another item that is borderline theft and not a mistake. We know this because the current City Council had public discussions about the issue and then thumbed their noses at the working people of this city and continue to collect this money. In any other business beside government and somebody would be fired for actions such as this.
Get out your pens and paper. Warm up your telephones. Fire up your computers. Do what ever you have to do to get in touch with the mayor and the City Council to let them know that we have had enough. No more mistakes. No more dishonest deals. No more cheating the tax payers. Lets get mad and make sure they know! |
