Westside Successes

Not too long ago, Myra McGill was the guest speaker at a Westside Community Watch meeting.  She was on hand to tell the group about the different types of programs available through Keeping Families Intact, a Gaston Together Initiative.  In the course of discussion with some of the groups senior members, it was discovered that there weren't many programs that the group knew about for Gaston Senior Citizens.  From that discussion came the West Gastonia Senior Citizen Resource Fair.  This is a great opportunity for Senior Citizens to learn about the different programs available to them and some other great benefits such as health screenings will be offered.  If you are a senior or you know a senior, make sure to get this information to them and make sure they attend this fantastic event born from a Westside Community Watch meeting.  Click HERE to view or print the event information.

Jenkins Heights neighborhood fought for and received a four way street sign at the corner of Scruggs and Mauney.  Despite resistance from the city, the request was finally granted.  The neighborhood gives credit to persistence by the Gastonia Police Department.  The officers that patrol the area also voiced their concerns for the stop signs and this has reduced speeds on Scruggs dramatically.  It is now safe for the children in the area and a small victory for the residents.  Working together they were able to solve a neighborhood problem and are currently tackling bigger problems.

Rhyne Elementary is a huge success story.  The faculty and teachers deserve most of the credit but many in the neighborhood have lent a helping hand.  Peggy Ferguson was instrumental in getting the Mentor Program going again and has recruited over 40 mentors.  Along with Third Street Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Ferguson has also started a mentoring program for parents.  With so many people workingtowards success, Rhyne is transforming into a terrific school.  Test scores are up and one of the teachers, Thomas Plecnik was named the Southwest Teacher of the Year for North Carolina.  Many others such as Allison King, head of the PTO, work so hard to make a difference in the children's lives. Rhyne Elementary is truly a West District success story.
